英文読解

“would have been 年齢”の形には２パターンあって、これまた例によって限りなく事実に近い場合と全然事実じゃない場合があります。
さらに、全然事実じゃない場合は“would be 年齢”の形も出てきます。

過去への推測

１．William Shakespeare Facts‐AbsoluteShakespeare.com.

  • Most academics agree that William wrote his first play, Henry VI, Part One around 1589 to 1590 when he would have been roughly 25 years old.

「だいたい２５歳だったに違いない」
過去の時点での年齢を推測しています。


２．An Exchange of Emails‐ alicemariebeard.com

It had always been believed that Julia (born 1875) had been taken into the interior of Russia by the Soviets, and it was presumed that she died there.
In 1941, she would have been 66 years old; she had borne NINE children!
So the assumption was that she would not have survived long under Soviet "care."

「1941年の時点で、Juliaばあちゃんは66歳だったはずだ」
これまた過去への推測。
推測の時は、話者はかなり自信があります。


その点、

「過去のことについて控えめな推量をする」ものとして次の例を参考に。

  • He would have been about fifty when he moved to London.

「彼がロンドンに引っ越した時は50歳くらいだっただろう（か）」

『だっただろう（か）』はあまりにも自信がなさすぎます。
「would＝控えめな推量」という公式にとらわれた間違いです。
というよりそもそも推測の意味では、“控えめな推量”なんてありません。
断言すると相手に悪いから敢えて推量の形にする、という婉曲表現はありますが。

まず、「サンライズクエスト英和辞典」の would の説明には
(5) 《控えめな推定・意向などを表して》（多分）…（だった）でしょう
という説明箇所があります。その例文の１つは↓こうです。

  • She would have been about 80 when she died.

『（多分）…（だった）でしょう』は本当に控えめ。
これまた、「would＝控えめな推量」という公式にとらわれた間違いです。


ちなみに、さきほどの引用先の続きで、書き言葉で過去の明示があってもwould have beenに直されている例が他にもありましたので引用しておきます。

いわゆる“反実仮想”

October 8 would have been my mother’s 99th birthday.
Healthy as she was in body, no doubt she still would be alive today had stroke dementia not taken her down a slow and painful downspiral over six years to her death, in 2000, at age 89.

「もし母が生きていたら、昨日で９９歳だった」、典型的な仮定法過去完了です。


そしてジョンレノンがもし生きていたらという場合だとこんな感じ。
２．Imagine: John Lennon would be 70 years old today; Yes, that's 6 years past 64 (※2010年10月7-13日号)‐ The Villager

Question: John Lennon would have been 70 on Saturday.
If he were alive today, what do you think he'd be doing?

見出しは今日のことで“would be”。
これは、『あの時死んでなかったら、今〜なのになあ』の形で、受験でも出てきますね。

ただ本文のほうはというと、１０月９日が土曜日なので「John Lennon would have been 70 on Saturday.」だと未来の話なのに“would have been”。
これは後回し。

これもMixed Conditionalの一例。


しかし、単純な仮定法の説明では理解できないケースが出てきます。
４．8 December Memories of John‐IMAGINE PEACE

I am the same age as John would have been today…

これは今日のことで“would have been”。
受験の知識が通用しないパターン。


これに対しては、
５．He would have been 107 this year.とは‐The Japan Times

  • He would have been 107 this year.

となっています。
107歳になるはずであったのは過去のことではなく今年のことなのでこの最後の文はHe would be 107 this year.とはならないのでしょうか？


…（中略）…


ここでwouldが使われているのは仮定法ですが、それまでの文章がずっと過去形であるため、そのままHe would be 107 this year.と続けるとこれも過去のことであるような錯覚があり、紛らわしいと思います。
そのためにHe would have been 107 this year.(〔生きていたならば〕今年は107歳であったろう)と書いたものでしょう(仮定法過去完了)。
このwouldは未来ではなく、推量(〜だったろう)です。

過去形が続くと紛らわしいという説明。
これが正しいのかどうかは分かりません。

The structure which describes unreal past situation can sometimes be used (especially in British English) to talk about present and future situations which are no longer possible because of the way things have turned out.

  • If my mother had been alive, she would have been 80 next year. (Or If my mother were alive, she would be…)
  • If my mother hadn’t knocked my father off his bicycle thirty years ago, I wouldn’t have been here now. (Or …I wouldn’t be here now.)

むしろ、もう実現可能性がない場合は仮定法過去と仮定法過去完了を混ぜたりしなくてもいいというルールがあるようです。
特にイギリス英語の場合に多いとありますが、googleの検索結果で見る限りはあまり関係なさそうです。


だから、

Happy birthday big boy, we miss you.

この悲しいタイトルは文法的に正しいことになります。
