could have doneは“したかもしれない”

1.can have done/can't have doneについて
Can have / Could have‐English Grammar Secrets

We can also use 'can have' to speculate about what has happened but only in questions and negative sentences and with words such as 'hardly', 'never' and 'only'.

2.could have done

We can use 'could have' to speculate about what has happened. (We can also use 'may have' or 'might have' in these situations.)

  • She could have taken the earlier train.
  • Simon could have told her.
  • They could have overheard what we said.

We can also use 'could have' to speculate about something that didn't happen.

  • You could have broken your neck, jumping out the window like that.
  • He could have hurt somebody, throwing a bottle out of the window like that.
  • I could have done well in my exam if I'd worked harder.

We can use 'could have' to talk about something somebody was capable of doing but didn't do.

  • I could have gone to Oxford University but I preferred Harvard.
  • She could have married him but she didn't want to.
  • They could have bought a house here 20 years ago but chose not to.

Often, there is a sense of criticism.

  • You could have phoned me to let me know.
  • They could have helped me instead of just sitting there.
  • I could have done more to help you. Sorry.

  • Colossal sea monster of Dorset that could have 'eaten T Rex for breakfast'dailymail.co

‘Its jaw was designed to deliver a bite so powerful that it could have ripped a car in half with no problem.
‘It could have taken a human in one gulp. In fact, something like a T Rex would have been breakfast for a beast like this.

You can also use 'could have' to talk about possible present situations that have not happened.

  • I could have been earning a lot as an accountant but the work was just too boring.
  • He could have been Prime Minister now but he got involved in a big financial scandal.
  • They could have been the market leaders now if they had taken his advice.

3.couldn't have doneについて
couldn't have donecould have doneの否定形ですので、同じように過去への推測と反実仮想の2つがあります。

We can use 'couldn't have' to talk about something we were not capable of doing.

  • I couldn't have managed without you.
  • I couldn't have got the job. He was always going to appoint his nephew.
  • I couldn't have enjoyed myself more. Thank you for a lovely day.

  • I just don't think that Brooke could've done this.(ブルックに殺せたはずがないわ。)

で、つまり「ブルックにできたはずがないと思う」 ⇒I just think that Brooke couldn't have done this.

could/might have‐WordReference.com

  • You can hurt his feelings by what you said. [You are able, you have the power, to hurt his feelings.]
  • You may hurt his feelings by what you said. [It is possible for you to hurt his feelings.]
  • That can hurt his feelings. [That has the power to hurt his feelings.]
  • That may hurt his feelings. [It is possible for that to hurt his feelings.]

Could is a form of can, and might a form of may, so the same nuance applies:

  • What you said could have hurt his feelings. [Your words had the power (or would have had the power) to hurt his feelings.]
  • What you said might have hurt his feelings. [It was possible (or it would have been possible) for your words to have hurt his feelings.]

would have been able to

一般的に、could have donewould have been able to doに置き換えられると言われています。

T. rex 'would outrun footballer'BBC

  • Tyrannosaurus rex would have been able to outrun a footballer, according to computer models used to estimate running speeds of dinosaurs.

のように、“would have been able to do”の形を使ったり、

T. Rex Could Outrun Humans‐nzherald.co.nz

  • Turns out, T. rex could have outrun some of the buffest athletes.

Alright, I know what you're thinking, if a child like Goku who didn't even know how to fly and use other ki attacks other than Kamehameha wave was able to beat them by himself, how much more Vegeta and Nappa when they arrived?

Well, remember that the Red Ribbon army made all those androids. So assuming Goku died from that fall when he was a baby, they would have been able to make so much more androids with Dr. Gero's genius. 20 androids if I'm not mistaken. Because that's like 10+ years of more android making and technology without Goku ruining it.

could have doneにまつわるQ&A

could have doneに関連した疑問で最も紛らわしいのが、can't have donecouldn't have doneにどのような違いがあるかという点です。

1.can't have done/couldn't have done‐WordReference.com

  • She can't have done it.

I refuse to believe that she did it.

  • She couldn't have done it.

It was not possible for her to have done it.

2.can't have 過去分詞とcouldn't have 過去分詞教えて!goo

4.He can't/couldn't have done such a thing.Yahoo!
回答

  • He couldn't have done such a thing.

can't have doneが過去への推測しか表さないのに対して、couldn't have doneは過去への推量/反実仮想という意味があるからです。

She couldn't be clever than me
